Times

August 29, 2008

”Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who
That it’s namin’.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside
And it is ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.”

My country, my home, my major, my outlook: all a-changin’.

So far, the only funny thing about moving back to Gainesville was changing my automatic wireless network from the one I used this summer at home, to the one we have here. Why was it funny? Because I forgot that we named our wireless network Cameltoe. “You are now connected to: Cameltoe! Signal strength: Excellent!” TeeHEHEH. I wonder what the neighbors think.

My classes this semester:

Nazism in Film: From Nuremberg to Southpark. This will kick ass. I think any class where you get credit for watching episodes of Southpark is guaranteed to kick ass.

Italian 2. It took me a year to get into this one. I’ve already forgotten everything I learned in Italian 1, except how to say ‘cheese’ and ‘good day.’ Buongiorno, formaggio! Should be fun.

Advanced Poetry Writing. This class will be great because it will force me to write every day. Also, it’s in what I think is one of the most beautiful buildings on campus. Very very fancy woodwork all over the place. Maybe I will write a poem about fancy, fancy woodwork?? Hmm.

Vegetable Gardening. Hear me out. I know the initial reaction is “What the hell, Cassie? What on earth makes you think this is a good idea? Shouldn’t you be taking business administration 1101 or Macro Biology?!” No! I shouldn’t be. Here’s why: When every piece of technology on earth fails us and we are left to live ONLY off of the land… will your knowledge of varriable annuity and antiderivatives fill your starving belly? Definitely not. You’ll be lucky if I share my sunflower seeds and cabbage soup with you, business majors. So, although it may seem like I am not thinking about my future or plotting any direction for my life, I am. I am not only thinking about the super-future, I am planning for it, damnit. Also, it will be fun to plant marigolds.

I want a new camera! Nikon or Pentax? Hm.

I bought a large pizza yesterday just for me. I will be having pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next week.

Democratic National Convention was AWESOME. All week I was watching CSPAN like it was my job. Everyone spoke so eloquently and with such conviction. They are burning for change, just like so many Americans are. Barack Obama is wildly intelligent and so filled with passion, intention, and fire. He said exactly what needed to be said, and I believe, when he is president, he will DO exactly what needs to be done here. “This election has never been about me.  It’s been about you.” Exactly.

It’s very, VERY exciting to be on one of the largest college campuses in America during such a critical time. I see thousands of people every day speaking, chanting, promoting one candidate, bashing another, supporting, debating, begging their peers to register to vote. We’re young and we have opinions. Maybe because we’re young, our opinions are too loud, too heated, sometimes ill-informed, sometimes very well-informed, and always out in the open for the rest of the world to absorb. I think that my generation will be a major factor in turning this nation upside down and bringing about the change it needs so desperately. I can’t wait.

Word of the Day

obeisance \oh-BEE-suhn(t)s; oh-BAY-suhn(t)s\, noun:
1. An expression of deference or respect, such as a bow or curtsy.
2. Deference, homage.

The nobles gave obeisance to the new king.

I didn’t know this word until just now. Now I know it, and I like it. “I” before “E” except after “C”? I don’t think so, obesiance. You rebel, you.

This word makes me wonder. What if people still bowed and curtsied? I think it could be nice. Or creepy. Or both? Maybe I should add the curtsy to my list of things to bring back. Other things on that list: the word “nifty,” the high-five, the band 5ive, and overalls.

Don’t recall 5ive? Having trouble remembering the melodic genius of their hits “Slam Dunk da Funk” and “I Want to Sex You Up”? Maybe this will help:

Tonight, I make obeisance to you, 5ive. “Slam dunk the funk. Put it up if you’ve got that feeling.” Indeed.
